Interview with Kid Massive

London based Danish native Benjamin “Kid Massive” Pedersen has been producing and djing for some time now and is world renown
His been djing all over the world and is working with some of the biggest names out there.
We wanted to know more more about him so we decieded to ask him a couple of questions.
You’ve been putting out loads of quality tracks over years under different names.
Where do you find all the inspiration ?
I like all sorts of music, everything from rock, old school funk, punk, pop.. and the same goes for house music.. I play a wide range of styles when im out, everything from deep techy to soulful and mainroom electro.. I like being able to make what ever I feel like.. that way a day in the studio never becomes the same..
Besides producing, you run 2 succesfull record labels Just Deep Records and Audiodamage Records.
How to do find the time for all this?
Just Deep is an outlet for my Pedersen name, I use this name when I produce deep and techy house music.. Just Deep basically means, anything goes just as long as its deep (DEEP HOUSE, DEEP MINIMAL, DEEP TECH, etc etc).. The 2nd single has just been released on the label.. and so far it gathering some good heavy names supporting it: ONIONZ - ROBERT OWENS - JIMPSTER and more..
Audiodamage is my club label, I release my own material on this label, as well as signing in tracks that work for me on the dance floor.. These are mostly up & coming artists like GABRIEL & CASTELLON - LOJAK - JAY DEE THOMAS . But on the remix I try and bring some solid well known names.. RAUL RINCON - ALI PAYAMI - PER QX (HOXTON WHORES) — KEVIN SUNRAY… the label has so far released 6 singles, which are available on beatport, traxsource and a few other select stores..
Audiodamage is also a dj tour, we have a weekly residency at KANYA on IBIZA.. with guests likes DJ PIERRE - ROBERT OWENS - ANGEL ANX - HANNA HAIS - PROK & FITCH and more.. We also have several residencys here in the UK.
What do you do when your not working?
HAHAHAHAHA, im always working.. Im a keen SCI FI freak.. so I try and squeeze a DVD in every now and then, but that’s not often… As my studios in my flat.. So it’s the first thing I do when I wake up.. Check mail, then check the tune I was working on the day before…
You’ve worked with some very famous “house music” vocalists over the years..
Is there any one in particular you would like to work with that you haven’t worked with yet?
Yeah, I have had the honour of working with, and remixing for people like ROBERT OWENS - PEPPER MASHAY - TARA MCDONALD - INCOGNITO - FARLEY JACKMASTER FUNK - ROSIE GAINES - ZAP MAMA and more…
I would love to work with LOU RHODES from the now defunct LAMB, she has an amazing voice, the same as the guy from SNOW PATROL !!! that would be great.. I don’t really care who I work with, im all up for using unknown talent.. they bring a certain amount of freshness to the table which I like.. I am at the moment working with a 21 year old vocalist ELLIOTTE WILLIAMS N´DURE, I found her at the local supermarket.. singing to her IPOD.. And now we have recorded 3 singles.. each one signed..
Who’s your favourit swedish producer/dj ?
Without a doubt, my main man ALI PAYAMI.. he is rocking some serious cuts at the moment, Ive always liked his productions, and he seems to be getting better and better for every track he releases !!!!.. He is also a wicked dj and a hell of cool guy… RESPECT
Who’s your favourite worldwide producer/dj ?
Production wise, I would have to say: DONS - AXWELL - LAIDBACK LUKE - DABRUCK & KELIN, and dj wise.. ROGER SANCHEZ - PROK & FITCH - AXWELL.. they all rock it for me, each in their own way..
What software/hardware do you use when producing?
I use logic pro 7, Mac g5, Fireface 800 soundcard, Tubetech stereo comp, Tubetech Summing and genelec / dynaudio monitors.. Nothing fancy, but it does what I want it to..
We’ve heard a lot of different sounding tracks from you.
Whats your favourite genre to produce?
I like ´to produce anything and everything.. It really depends on what sort of mood im in.. I love doing deep & tech house.. check my PEDERSEN alias on Beatport, but I would say its mainroom house that does it for me.. Im trying to reinvent myself, just so I don’t always do the same thing.. that’s extremely boring.. the same for when I remix.. create something new.. that’s the way I look at it..
Any tips and trix for new fresh talents that are trying to “make it”?
Here are a few pointers that I think might come in handy:
1. make sure you play/ produce what you like, find the style that suits you and stick to it, don’t play / produce certain styles just because its in fashion..) FASHION CHANGES !!!!!
2. when out on a gig, ALWAYS remember to represent yourself in the best way possible, we are not rocket scientist´s, we simply play music. NEVER FORGET THAT !!!, leave your ego at the door when you walk in… It will be there when you leave..
3. when embarking on your first sets of gigs, make sure you get paid.. NEVER play for free, you are simply underminding your self and all the work and effort you have put into it.. NOTHING IN THIS WORLD COMES FOR FREE !!
4. when djing, you are technically at work, its not the chance for you to get drunk for free.. DRUNK DJS CANT MIX (that’s a fact).. though they seem to think they can !!!!!. The more proffesional you present yourself, the more respect the booker will have for you, and the likelihood of a rebooking increases..
5. make sure your technical skills are up to scratch.. nothing worse than a dj who cant mix, its not that difficult actually.. If you can count to 4, then you can learn to mix.. !!!
What do you think of music blogs that share music ?
I don’t really use them myself.. I try and support the scene by buying the music I like.. A lot of the blogs are just full up with illegal tracks.. that is killing music.. I don’t mind the odd track sharing, but some people take it to the extreme and completely over do it.. and that’s what is killing music, and making it hard for people like me to make any money on the music we release… moderation is the key…
Anything you would like to add?
